07 NCAC 03B .0507          ART CONSULTING SERVICE

(a)  Depending upon availability of qualified members of the museum professional staff, an examination and consultation service may be offered to private citizens who desire information or advice concerning works of art owned by them.

(b)  Examination is by appointment or at times designated by the museum. Oral opinions only may be given, at the discretion of the staff member, on such matters as attribution, date, and authenticity of the work, as well as advice on restoration, framing, or other technical subjects. Opinions are presented as the personal views of the staff member and shall not be understood or reported to have the endorsement of the museum or the state.

(c)  The following will be excluded from any opinion or consultation rendered under this service: monetary appraisals, assistance in the sale of private property, and promotion of any particular art dealer, auction house, conservator, framer, or commercial entity. However, information as to the availability of auction records, directories of commercial art establishments, and impartial advice as to how a desired service might be obtained may be given.
